This concept was part of my final major collection for my BA (honours) Textile Design at BCU. I have always been inspired by Birmingham and have a love for fantasy films. I find films intriguing where ordinary characters wake up to an unreal setting- films like Wizard of Oz or Alice in Wonderland. I imagine myself waking up to a transformed Fantasy Birmingham where the colours are very vivid – purples, pinks and blues and a variety of textures. These images also form a collage of notable landmarks which will eventually include Birmingham Museum, Town Hall, Custard Factory and more. I don’t want these images to appear cliched but as a striking depiction of Birmingham’s industrial heritage, modern development and direct interpretations of the landscapes.
To create the images I used digital photography and then manipulated them using photoshop several times. After printing them onto fabric when I added textures using machine and hand embroidery techniques. I also incorporated embellishments and then created homewares such as cushions and wall hangings.
